Guardians of the Ocean：Datang DSSP Power Indoesia
In the vast ocean, islands are like gems embedded in the azure sea. Among them, Southeast Sulawesi in Indonesia stands out as a shining pearl. Here, Datang DSSP Power Indonesia (DDPI) is writing the story of the 'Guardians of the Ocean' , a legend dedicated to protecting marine ecosystems and promoting green development.
In 2019, the Kendari Power Plant, operated by DDPI, a subsidiary of China Datang Overseas Investment Co., Ltd., was constructed on this fertile land. Equipped with two 56MW coal-fired units, the plant serves as a critical support for the regional power grid, ensuring a stable electricity supply to the Kendari area. However, Datang employees’ responsibilities extend beyond just power generation. They are deeply aware that the operation of the power plant is not only crucial to electricity supply but also to the preservation of the surrounding marine ecosystem.
Marine ecosystems are increasingly vulnerable to global climate change. Coral reefs, serving as a pivotal component of marine ecosystems, not only provide vital habitats and breeding grounds for numerous marine species but also possess significant ecological functions and economic value. Mangroves, hailed as the 'coastal guardians' and the 'green lungs of the oceans' ,are habitats for rare and endangered waterfowl and amphibious creatures, as well as breeding grounds for fish, shrimp, crabs, and shellfish. Recognizing the importance of these natural wonders, Datang employees have committed themselves to protecting coral reefs and mangroves, and maintaining marine biodiversity. In 2022, they initiated the 'Coral Reef Restoration and Mangrove Plantation' project.?
At the start of the project, DDPI collaborated with local government agencies, including the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries at Halu Oleo University, the Southeast Sulawesi Environmental Protection Bureau, the Southeast Sulawesi Marine and Fisheries Management Bureau, the South Konawe Environmental Protection Bureau, local military units, and the police force. Together, they conducted a comprehensive marine survey of the coral reefs in the region, gaining insight into the current status, distribution, and ecological challenges. Every step was taken with great caution, so as not to disturb the fragile ecosystem.
Based on thorough research,the team from DDPI began their coral cultivation journey. They carefully selected healthy coral fragments or seedlings for nurturing, providing high-quality coral sources for future transplantation. The power plant's coal fly ash was ingeniously used to create fish habitats, offering a cozy home for marine life.
The transplantation work tested the intelligence and patience of the Datang Employees. They employed scientific methods and specialized tools to carefully transplant the cultivated corals into damaged areas. Coral transplantation is a heartfelt dialogue with the ocean, and each successful transplantation is the best gift to nature. After more than two years of relentless effort, they have successfully restored two phases of coral reefs, set up 200 "coral spider webs," installed 100 "fish apartments," and completed the transplantation of 1,400 coral specimens. Encouragingly, monitoring shows that the survival rate of the transplanted corals is as high as 89%.
At the same time, the employees of Datang have also turned their attention to the mangroves. This magical forest, known as the "guardian of the coast," is not only a habitat for rare waterfowl and marine life but also serves as a natural barrier against wind and waves, purifying seawater. Within the tidal flats of the plant area, Datang employees built a "mangrove nursery," hiring technicians to conduct research on cultivation methods and seedling growth. One by one, tender green mangrove seedlings took root in this fertile land and grew robustly.
To protect this precious green treasure, Datang collaborated with local government management agencies to establish a conservation area, restricting illegal fishing and destructive activities. They understood that only by reducing human interference could the marine life thrive in a more suitable environment. All these efforts have contributed to the vibrant vitality of the marine ecosystem.
After more than two years of relentless efforts, the mangrove nursery has grown to a scale of over 30,000 seedlings. To date, DDPI has successfully transplanted 32,000 mangrove seedlings, far exceeding the government’s target of 10,000, covering approximately 32,000 square meters of tidal flats. These mangroves can absorb more than 2,200 tons of carbon dioxide annually, making a significant contribution to improving the local environment.
This project by DDPI holds significant ecological, economic, and social importance, providing valuable experience and inspiration for global marine and mangrove ecosystem protection. Their efforts have promoted sustainable marine ecological development, protected biodiversity, positively impacted the local economy, and enhanced public awareness and participation in environmental protection.
The successful implementation of this important project earned Datang DSSP Power Indonesia the 2024 Indonesian Five-Star Social Responsibility Award, the highest recognition for corporate social responsibility in Indonesia. The project has been widely reported and praised by major media outlets such as Xinhua News Agency and the Indonesian Jurnal Post.?
